Safety first when performing DIY

When undertaking DIY your safety is the most important thing to consider. DIY can be very dangerous if you are inexperienced and if you don’t take your safety seriously enough. When using power tools and other DIY equipment it is important to realise the safety risks involved. There are hundreds of accidents in the home every week resulting from a lack of safety using DIY tools and equipment. Below we have outlined a number of tips for working safely with DIY tools and equipment.

1. Familiarise yourself with your tools

Before starting any DIY job make sure to familiarise yourself with your required tools and make sure you are using the correct tool for the job. Always read the instruction manual before using any power tool. This will save you time in the long run and will help you to avoid accidents. When using power tools make sure to keep an eye on any loose wires and ensure that all loose items of clothing and jewellery etc are secured before the tool is switched on. Always ensure that the power tool is switched off in between usage and when changing parts on the tool.

2. Wear protective clothing

Always wear the correct protective clothing such as safety goggles, gloves and dust masks when working with potentially hazardous tools and materials. There can be no short cuts with DIY safety. Do not try to take on a job that’s too big. Some jobs must be left to the professionals. If you think you may in any way struggle to complete a job safely consult a professional and obtain a quote.

3. Don’t rush a job

Always take your time with any job. Most accidents that occur are due to a lack of preparation or a job being rushed. Carefully plan your job before you start and if you are in any doubt as to your ability to complete a job safely consult a professional or at least ask a friend for some help and advice.

4. Keep tools in a safe and secure place

Ensure all of your tools are in a safe and secure place out of reach of children. Ideally keep all tools in a secure locked toolbox that is not going to fall from a height. Many injuries occur due to an unlocked, falling toolbox that has not been secured properly after use. A little time spent tidying up can save a lot of pain.

5. Common Sense

A lot of accidents and injuries can be avoided simply through the use of common sense. A quick 2 minute job at the top of a ladder carries the same risk element as a larger job such as re-tiling a roof. You can still fall the same distance and cause just as much damage.

And yes, it does sound obvious, but always be extra careful when using blades and sharp objects. One small slip can cause a lot of damage. Also check all of your tools before starting a job. If a tool has been damaged, has a loose head or blade, make sure to have it fixed or replaced before continuing with the job.

6. Keep a first aid kit to hand

Always make sure you have a first aid kit readily available. Remember, you can prepare as well as possible but accidents can and do happen. It is always better to be fully prepared just in case you do have an accident.

If you apply these 6 safety tips and take care and consideration of safety while you work you should be able to complete the job to an excellent standard whilst not injuring yourself in the process.
